"I'm starting a business in which I build portable sinks and sell them. I'm building and working out of my house. What legal permits or licenses must I acquire?"
A few years back one of our students also grew a manufacturing business(bird houses/feeders) out of his house. He started out making the bird feeders in his room at home, and sold them to family and friends. As there was a growing demand for his bird feeders, he started making them out of his garage, then hired his aunt and uncle to help keep up with demand. PROBLEM! Sedgwick County Zoning Ordinances are very strict when it comes to operating businesses (especially manufacturing) in a residential neighborhood. Although his business was spared the fines when the violations were discovered, the business was shut down, and he was forced to look for an area zoned for manufacturing, resulting in a lost sales as he was forced to cease producing his product. A couple of suggestions; check with the Office of Central Inspection (City Hall), for local licensing laws governing a home-based business. Also you may want to locate a "Steps to Success" book from the Kansas Department of Commerce. This book is also available at www.kansas.gov/businesscenter. Click the link "steps for success" on the menu on the right hand side of the page. Good luck with your business!
